There have always been people who hated and persecuted different races, religions, gender, etc. etc. etc. We all think we would have opposed slavery, the Nazis, etc.
We are being tested now - on which side of history will you stand?
(Libertarians, feel free to step up any time now.)

I'll add too that it is absolutely essential that those who are not in the persecuted groups stand up for them.
If you are persecuted, others will see it potentially as a self-interested position, and, therefore, less valid. If a disinterested party stands up it removes that question or doubt.
