Soundtrack of Cosmos (original)

So according to the United States Supreme Court, you (public businesses) can now legally discriminate against LGBTQ people. And nothing in the ruling indicates there is any limit to future discrimination. (If you doubt that, please read Justice Sotomoyor's dissent from the case and/or listen to the first half of this podcast. This is probably the best reaction I've seen: "Michael Imperioli forbids ‘bigots and homophobes’ from watching his work following Supreme Court ruling."

But the Supreme Court also says you can't try to help people from historically-oppressed classes. You can, of course, continue to give preferential treatment to the children of rich alumni.

So it's heads I (rich white men) win, tails you lose. Gotcha.

That sentiment echoed Justice Sonia Sotomayor's dissent.

"The Court subverts the constitutional guarantee of equal protection by further entrenching racial inequality in education, the very foundation of our democratic government and pluralistic society," she wrote.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the court's first Black female justice, also chimed in, saying: "With let-them-eat-cake obliviousness, today, the majority pulls the ripcord and announces 'colorblindness for all' by legal fiat. But deeming race irrelevant in law does not make it so in life."

The 2016 election, combined with the electoral college, will continue to echo for the rest of my lifetime.

With SCOTUS at 6-3, there will be decisions I fear set the country back even beyond my lifetime.
