Updated ACE Charts
Thanks to our friends at Animal Charity Evaluators for updating two of the three most important graphs out there.
I think graphics like these are one of the most useful tools for animal activists. They put things into a perspective that the average person can actually wrap their head around.
Consider that in the U.S. alone, 10,000 dogs and cats are euthanized every day, but 1 million farmed animals are killed every HOUR.
To me, those are shocking figures, but because they are so shocking, they can be very hard for the average person to wrap their mind around....and it gets even worse when you consider the worldwide figures:
Upwards of 60 thousand million (60 Billion) animals have their throats cut in slaughterhouses annually.
Which equals 1.153 billion animals slaughtered per week (1,153 million)
Which equals 165 million slaughtered per day.
Almost seven million per hour.
All the dogs and cats that have been rescued and saved by the animal movement in the past 50 years are fewer than the number of animals who will die in slaughterhouses in the next 8 hours.
To me, those are beyond-shocking figures, and it's understandable that the average person feels overwhelmed when they first hear them. The biggest downside I've found to presenting just figures and numbers is that they can seem so overwhelming, the average writes off that anything they could do will actually have any impact.
Visual tools, such as these graphics, can put things into a perspective that the average person can comprehend and then spur them on to help, instead of feeling overwhelmed and turning away.
Instead of turning away because they feel overwhelmed by incomprehensible figures, graphics such as these above can help average person "get it" instead of turning away.
Well figured Christine, but I kind of like numbers. Of those farmed land animals raised and killed for food in the US, about 24 out of 25 are birds; about 23 chickens, 1 turkey, 1/3 of a pig and 1/10th of a cow consumed by the average consumer each year. Due to their relatively smaller size compared to pigs and cows, more birds suffer and die to feed meat eaters through time. Birds also suffer the most intensely due to painfully rapid growth and constant ammonia burning. Hence they are our focus, www.onestepforanimals.org
