The poet John Keats accused Newton of destroying the poetry of the rainbow by 'reducing it to the prismatic colours.'
This piece by Tommy Blanchard is the best short refutation of this idea that I've read in quite a while (probably since Carl Sagan died). Recognizing that the universe is simply a deterministic collection of matter and energy doesn't make life worse, it makes our existence literally wonder-full.
