Confession Two: Don’t mistake shared religion for friendship

Pet Shop Boys - Friendly Fire

A whole lotta atoms.

As mentioned, I spent decades trying to get people to “like” me / my group’s work.

However, after we were fired in 2014, a number of people I truly considered personal friends turned out to be … not.

Very much not.

As I summarized in Losing My Religions:

A majority of people I considered friends took the vegan side. (Veganism über alles!) One later contacted me with the news that the coup-supporting leafletter had left the group for an actual animal advocacy organization. “I thought he would never leave,” she wrote. “I guess you were right.”

Ya think?

Long before those events, I had written with sympathy about the need many vegans have for validation. Any validation at all. In our society, it is understandable. And, of course, they could do no other.

But even to this day, I sometimes have these very brief feelings of vertigo, having gone from believing thousands of people “liked” me, hundreds were friends, and several dozen could be trusted and depended upon to … not.
