Colbert to his wife Evie: "I can't believe you think someone who tells jokes to people chanting his name is insecure." They seem to have a happy marriage, and Evie's veganism comes up now and again.

Last week, I had the chance to meet the rest of the folks at the Organization to Prevent Intense Suffering (OPIS, preventsuffering.org). (My connection to the organization followed from the conclusions I drew while writing, at age 54, "Biting the Philosophical Bullet" in Losing My Religions.) OPIS' important projects include focusing research resources on alleviating cluster headaches and working for access to morphine. (pain relief should be a human right)
I emailed the group a bit of my background, including a description* of Losing. 27 hours later, one of them (a non-native speaker of English) wrote back to the thread:
Dear Matt, thanks for your book, I went through it with lightning speed and found it nonetheless pleasingly conformed to the description you made.
I think only this person has read it faster.
*Although I’m not as smart or thoughtful as Jonathan (and probably all the rest of you), you might find parts of my latest book interesting. Unlike my first two, it is not written for activists. It tells the story of how I got to where I am today, including my various professional failures and encounters with extreme suffering (and extreme pleasure). There’s philosophy, sports, meditation, photography, links to books that influenced me, song lyrics (and links), money tips, etc. There are sure to be things you dislike but probably some things you like. Everyone (but one) has found it funny. It is incredibly self-indulgent, but outside of my relationship with Anne, it is the best thing I’ve done.
