Lots of people died, but most lived. The horrific footage looks like there would have been no way that anyone survived, but hundreds did.
The article does a good job of explaining how unbelievable the piloting was. But it is really, really difficult to fully convey just how incredible - almost miraculous - it was. This was back when I was an aerospace engineer, and we talked about it with amazement and awe for days. Other pilots, even knowing what the original pilots did, were unable to replicate it in simulators.
And FYI: Flying is far safer than ever before.
