A bit more on pride

Rosanne Cash: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

We were fortunate enough to see Rosanne this past weekend.

For me, pride is something you can feel when you have accomplished something hard. Thus, it sounds grating to me when someone (Person A) says they are proud of someone else (Person B). Person A didn't do anything. Person A's expression of pride in Person B sounds paternalistic and condescending.

"I'm proud of you" makes sense when talking to a young child who looks up to you. It is a way to help program the child to value hard work.

This is just me; I'm not saying this is how it is or should be for others. But when someone accomplishes something (example) I'm happy for them, and impressed.
